Houston’s Best Pet Sitters invites you to play with your dog…for science!

copyright 2012 Melanie WhitmanHouston’s Best Pet Sitters–and a team of researchers–wants to know:  How do you and your dog play together? Tug-o-war?  Chase?  Or my personal favorite, the “Jump, Tuck, and Scoot”?   Upload a short video of you and your best friend at play, and you and your dog can contribute to our better understanding of man’s (and woman’s) best friend.

How people and their dogs play is the subject of an exciting new study of dogs;  how they think, behave, and learn. Have fun with your dog and be part of this research project by the Horowitz Dog Cognition Lab.

Here’s a brief summary of the study (the full details are at DogHumanPlay.com):

“The Horowitz Dog Cognition Lab is run by Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, author of Inside of a Dog:  What dogs see, smell, and know.  Based in New York City, we study the behavior and cognition of companion dogs.  Read more about us and our research at DogCognition.com. We are presently investigating play between dogs and people, and we need your help (well, you and your dog’s help)!

Show us how you play!

We are exploring all the different ways people and dogs play together.  Join the study in these easy steps:

  • Complete a short survey
  • Upload a video of you and your dog playing, i.e. you are in the video playing with your dog, however you like to play together
  • Submit your video by March 31, 2013
  • Share a picture of you and your dog on our Wall of Contributors (optional)

That’s it!

Project: Play with Your Dog is open to anyone, in any country.  If you live with a dog, we want to see you play.  This is a rare opportunity for dog owners across the globe to get involved in scientific research into dog behavior.  We hope to collect many videos, so please tell your dog friends.  Thank you for playing!”

We’d love to post some of your videos on Houston’s Best Pet Sitters’ Facebook page, too.  Send ’em to me!
